Why I Became a Music Therapist

Between my first and second year at Berklee, my grandmother was diagnosed with cancer. My grandmother is not your average grandmother. She is a sassy woman with vibrant hair. I went to visit her for her 80th birthday and the chemo and radiation therapies had affected her personality. My sassy grandma was now always tired and did not want to leave the house. Her hair was gone and she was not the same woman I grew up with.

Something changed when we went to her birthday party. I'll never forget the way she stood up, smiled for what seemed like the first time in weeks, and danced her heart away to music from her childhood. That's when I knew what a profound effect music can have on us. I believe that music builds connections, I experienced it when my grandma and I connected that day. The music connected something within her, which allowed her to connect to everyone else celebrating.

My grandmother inspired me that day and I will forever be thankful to her for helping me find my way to music therapy. I love watching my clients succeed and make connections through music that they could not in other ways and I look forward to continuing to help others reach their full potential and experience a full life.
